This is going to be something!

I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am about the ‘SpeedPoets Only’ collaboration between Pascalle Burton & Tylea that will envelop one and all at the Hideaway (188 Brunswick St) this Saturday, August 31. Anyone who saw them together on the stage at QPF 2012, will, I am sure, share my excitement.

To get you buzzing, here’s the film that won Pascalle Burton the 2013 QPF Filmmaker’s Challenge and an absolute gem from Tylea’s former band, Gota Cola. Now imagine the combined adventurous spirit of these two ladies on stage… good times ahead!

And of course, there will be bountiful open mic opportunities, free zines, raffles and the guitar roar of Sheish Money. Be there to experience something special!

SpeedPoets this Saturday!

SpeedPoets

That’s right folks… if you are anywhere near the great city of Brisbane this Saturday, get along to one of its best kept secrets, The Hideaway (188 Brunswick St. Fortitude Valley) for the June installment of SpeedPoets. We will be throwing open the doors at 1:30pm with feature sets from Melbourne-based spoken word innovator, Santo Cazzati and rock legend, Kellie Lloyd (ex-Screamfeeder).

And of course, you can secure your place on stage by signing on for the Open Mic. All readers are automatically in the running to take out the coveted title of Call-Back-Poet. What does this mean? Well it means you will be invited up on stage to read a poem to close the day and be offered a feature reading at the last gig of the year in November, where each poet is up for the title of SpeedPoets Open Mic Champion 2013, $200 cash and a zine of your work published and launched at the February 2014 event. Sound good! I think so…

To check out all of this year’s Call-Back-Poets and listen to work from this month’s features visit the SpeedPoets website. And most importantly, get along and support Brisbane’s longest running monthly poetry gig this Saturday! And hey, if you can, give it a shout to your networks… here’s the Facebook link.

SpeedPoets fills your Easter with words

SpeedPoets is gearing up to bring the words to The Hideaway this Easter Saturday from 1:30pm, and we have a sexy new poster to help spread the word!

As part of the March gig, we are launching two brilliant new collections, haematograms by Nigel Ellis (aka Bruce Dorlova) and Confessional Box by Vanessa Page. Here’s what I had to say about each book:

“Confessional Box maps the undulating landscapes of home, love and letting go. Page’s poems are sensuous, compassionate and filled with quiet wisdom; they are a celebration of the world’s infinite gifts.”

“haematograms reaches into the tight corners of the mind to seize instants of clarity. Ellis is unique in his knowing, sharpest when catching things that he knows won’t last. This is an impressive debut, one where the charm of the ordinary and the mysterious collide; where the reader is transported into the poet’s other-world to walk the edge of his imagining.”

So, if you are anywhere near Brisbane, tuck a poem or three in your pocket and come along. All readers in Open Mic Section are automatically in the running to be named Call-Back-Poet for the month. Each Call-Back-Poet earns themselves a feature spot at the final gig for the year in November as well as the opportunity to win cash prizes and be named SpeedPoets Open Mic Champion for 2013.

Hope to see you all there…

SpeedPoets at The Hideaway tomorrow!

Brisbane’s longest running poetry event, SpeedPoets, rises from its summer slumber tomorrow, and takes the stage at their brand new home, The Hideaway (188 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley).

While we may have been on hiatus for the last few months, there has been plenty happening. The winners of the 2012 SpeedPoets Open Mic Championships are currently being featured over at Stilts. This week, the spotlight is on Chloe Callistemon, so head on over and get a hit of her poetry, on the screen and in your ear (yep, there’s audio). You can also read an interview with Sheish Money, one of tomorrow’s features, over at the SpeedPoets site.

Tomorrow marks the beginning of the 13th year of SpeedPoets, which in this age of the throw-away, is pretty special. Sheish Money is one of the few that have been there from the very first venue (downstairs at Belushis), so it is fitting that he will be fronting his new band, Moveable Feast and filling the room with his guitar roar and booming vocal. Also featuring tomorrow is 2012 SpeedPoets Open Mic Champion, Andrew Phillips. And to make things even more special, Andrew will be inviting Tiggy Johnson up to the stage for a poem or two from their stunning collection, That Zero Year.

But let’s not forget you… that’s right, you! The SpeedPoets Open Mic is what drives the event, so make sure you are there with a poem or three tucked in your pocket, ready to make them sing! You may just be named Call-Back-Poet of the month and have the honour of finishing the day with a set of 2-3 poems. Each of the monthly Call-Back-Poets will also be given a feature spot at the final gig of the year in November and be in the running to win cash prizes and the title, 2013 SpeedPoets Open Mic Champion.

See you all at the Hideaway tomorrow!
