Another Beat Generation Poet Passes On…

Lenore Kandel, shining light of the San Francisco poetry scene, author of the notorious, The Love Book has died aged 77. The Love Book, a small pamphlett made up of four poems, was seized by police in 1966 as hard-core pornography and book sellers were arrested for its sale. It was often said, Kandel saw the [...]

QWC Blog Tour stops by Another Lost Shark

The good folk at QLD Writers Centre have set sail on a blog tour from October to December this year, stopping by a number of sites and asking the people behind them a few questions about what makes them tick. So here’s what this Lost Shark had to say when they came knocking.

Where do your words come [...]

Jim Carroll is dead: Long live Jim Carroll

Poet, punk and underground legend Jim Carroll has died aged 6o. Best known for The Basketball Diaries, his poetry was wild and raw, born from a skin that was well and truly lived in. Here’s the video for the cult classic People Who Died. I am sure Jim would enjoy the irony.

A Million Bright Things

The Saturday night session at QPF 2009, A Million Bright Things, is shaping up to be one of the poetry events of the year, featuring every programmed artist + a feature set from legendary Australian singer/songwriter Neil Murray (Warumpi Band). Now that is what I call an all-star poetry jam!

QPF Spotlight #12 – Brianna Carpenter

Brisbane songbird Brianna Carpenter is one of the many singer/songwriters gracing the QPF stage in 2009. I have always been a firm believer that song lyrics are our first exposure to poetic language, so it was great to be able to ask Brianna about the role poetry plays in her songwriting process.

How does a song begin [...]

QPF Spotlight #11 – Santo Cazzati

Santo Cazzati hit Brisbane last month for two gigs and left behind a trail of whirling words and smiling faces. Both gigs left people wanting more and lucky for us, Santo will be heading back in August to give us all another blast of his unique spoken word style. I asked Santo to tell me about where his poems [...]

QPF Spotlight #10 – an interview with Hinemoana Baker

Hinemoana Baker has hit the ground running as the 2009 Arts QLD Poet-in-Residence. I caught up with her recently to have a chat about her experience so far.

Since arriving you have had the opportunity to travel to the ‘big-sky country’ of Western QLD, visiting Blackall and Longreach. How was your experience and what affect did [...]

QPF Spotlight #8 – Bremen Town Musician

My QPF 2009 program is already suitably inked, with many sessions marked that I just cannot miss. One of those sessions features the blistering soundscape rock of Bremen Town Musician. Their 2008 album, No one is holding a gun to your head (Songs to Run to), is still stealing my breath and I am busting at [...]

QPF Spotlight #7 – Noelle Janaczewska

Today the spotlight is shining on Noëlle Janaczewska. Noëlle is an accomplished writer in a number of styles including poetry, plays, performance texts and radio scripts. I had the pleasure of talking to her about her influences, the role of spontaneity the importance of performance and the writing process. Here’s what she had to say:

What is the role of [...]
